에게 감사드립니다. 또한 인터뷰에 응해주신 왕년의 Gnidrolog 기타리스트 
Stewart Elliott Goldring에게 진심으로 감사드립니다. 매우 성의있게 
답해주셨네요.

모두들 아시겠지만 Gnidrolog은 SiWan Record에서 재발매한 70년대 영국 
prog rock의 단편이었고, 많은 사람들이 좋아하고 있는 밴드 입니다. 
어제 메일을 보냈는데 바로 답장이 왔어요. 그럼 이제부터 인터뷰 내용을 
공개합니다. 





[YBD] 
    인터뷰에 응해줘서 너무 고맙다. 그리고 CDP를 통해 듣고 감동해했던
    음악의 주인공을 이렇게 e-mail을 통해서라도 만나게 되어서 너무 반갑다.
    그럼 예바동 멤버들이 고른 질문 10개를 다음과 같이 보낸다.

    as well as I can.

[YBD] 
  Q1. 당신의 밴드는 '71~'72년사이 메이저 레이블인 RCA로부터 두 장의
    앨범을 발매 했다. Lady Lake앨범의 경우 'Same Dream'같은 싱글
    취향의 곡이 있기도 하지만 그리 상업적인 음악은 아니었다고 생각
    한다. 당신들이 지향하는 음악은 어떤 것이었는가? 영향을 주고 받은
    밴드는 있었는가?

[Goldring] 
  A1. Gnidrolog's music was not intended for commercial purposes. 
    Like many bands we were trying to explore improvisation using 
    modern techniques through songs and instrumental strategies. 
    Although we were signed to RCA which was a big company, they 
    were also interested in progressive music and our work has to 
    be placed in the context of the progressive genre at the time 
    being explored by bands like Soft Machine, King Crimson and Yes. 
    Colin [ my brother] appears on 'The Yes Album' playing recorders 
    on the track ' Your Move.'  The intention of the band was to 
    entertain musically and to break down the barriers by widening 
    our listeners' appreciation of more challenging and demanding 
    music. We were also highly influenced by music from the West Coast 
    of America by bands like Frank Zappa, Spirit, Bob Dylan and Grateful 
    Dead. I have it on good authority that we were highly influential 
    to many of the progressive bands at the time including Gentle Giant 
    and Sparks.

    Gnidrolog의 음악은 상업적인 목적에 고려한 것이 아니었어. 다른 많은 
    밴드들과 마찬가지로 노래와 연주 방법을 통해 최신 기술을 사용하여 
    즉흥 작품을 개발하고자 하는 노력을 하고 있었지.
    대기업인 RCA에 우리가 사인을 하긴 했지만, 그들도 역시 progressive
    rock 관심을 가지고 있었고, 우리의 역작은 당시 Soft Machine, King 
    Crimson, Yes 와 같은 밴드들에 의해 개척되어지고 있는 progressive 
    장르의 범주에 있어야 했어. 내 형인 Colin은 _The Yes Album_의 
    'Your Move' 트랙에 피리를 불어줬어.
    우리밴드의 목적은 음악적으로 즐기는 것이었고, 음악을 더욱 탐험하고
    요구하는 우리 팬의 감상 영역을 넓힘으로써 장벽을 허물려는 것이었지.
    우리는 또한 Frank Zappa, Spirit, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead와 같은
    미국 서해안의 음악에 많이 영향을 받았어. 우리는 Gentle Giant 그리고
    Sparks을 포함한 당시 많은 progressive rock에게 많은 영향을 
    주었다고들 하더군.

  Q2. 'I Could Never Be A Soldier'에 대해서 말하지 않을 수 없다. 
    이 곡은 단순한 Chord Progression에 각 악기들이 솔로를 하고 
    있는 연주부분과 노래부분이 절묘하게 결합되어 있어. 10분이라는
    긴 시간임에도 불구하고 지루함이 별로 느껴지지 않는 훌륭한 
    곡이다. 이 곡에 대해 말해달라.

[Goldring] 
  A2. I am glad you like 'I could Never Be a Soldier.' It is 
    a particular favourite of ours - especially the excellent use of 
    recorders and flutes together. The song reflects the considerable 
    concern at the time for the terrible war in Vietnam and the west's 
    involvement leading to the tragic loss of life suffered by young 
    people on both sides.

    너희들이 'I Could Never Be a Soldier'를 좋아한다니 기뻐. 그 곡은 우리 
    곡중에서도 가장 좋아하는 것이었어 - 특별히 아주 좋은 flute과 피리(리코더)
    를 함께 사용했어. 그곡은 베트남의 끔찍한 전쟁과 양쪽에서 젊은이들을 
    겪게될 비극적인 죽음을 이끌었던 서양이 전쟁에 연루되는 시대에 대한 
    큰 관심을 반영하고 있지.

  Q3. 앨범에서 가장 비상업적이라 할 수 있는 'Lady Lake'를 타이틀
    곡으로 정한 이유는? 또한 앨범과 재킷의 컨셉은 뭐였는가?
    Gnidrolog란 무슨 뜻인가? 

[Goldring]
  A3. The concept of 'Lady Lake' came from a poem I wrote and the cover 
    design by the bass player, Peter Mars Cowling. If you listen to the 
    words of the song you will find out that it deals with loneliness and 
    alienation. The words are influenced by Lady Guinevere who was the 
    lady of the lake in King Arthur's court. I hoped that the words painted 
    a picture of the coldness and loneliness of the lake and compared it 
    with the loss of loved ones. Like all poems, the sound of the words 
    and poetry are intended to be  as important as the emotions they express.

    'Gnidrolog' is a sort of anagram of our family name - Goldring. 
    The letters are jumbled and confused - like the music.

    'Lady Lake'의 컨셉은 내가만든 시로부터 나왔고 커버 디자인은
    베이스를 연주했던 Peter Mars Cowling이 했어. 너희들이 이곡의 가사를
    음미한다면, 그것은 고독과 소외를 다루고 있다는 것을 알게 될거야.
    그 가사는 아더왕의 궁전에 있던 호수의 미녀였던 Guinevere 아줌마에게서 
    영향을 받았어. (아더왕의 전설에 나오는 것 같은데 저는 자세히 몰라요) 
    (네오자오: Guinevere는 아서왕의 부인입니다. 엑스칼리버에
    보면 랜슬롯과 이루지 못할 사랑을 하기도 했던 바로 그 기네비어
    왕비네요.)
    나는 내 가사가 냉정과 외로움의 그림을 그리길 바랬고, 또한 그 그림이
    사랑받았던 것들의 상실과 비교되길 바랬어. 다른 모든 시와 마찬가지로
    가사와 시의 소리가 그들이 표현해려 했던 감정만큼 중요하게 하려고 했어.

    'Gnidrolog'은 우리 성 - Goldring -의 anagram 중 하나야.
    글자들이 뒤죽박죽 엉키었지. 음악처럼.

  Q4. Gnidrolog의 1집인 _In Spite of Harry's Toe-Nail_ 을 들어본 사람이
    별로 없어. 1집이 더 낫다고 하는 사람들이 많은데, master tape은
    아직 가지고 있니? 재발매할 생각은 없어?

[Goldring]
  A4. In Spite of Harry's Toe Nail is an excellent album especially the 
    first track - Long Live Man Dead. The master tapes are owned by RCA 
    Victor and I understand it is a very collectable album. Please contact 
    the record company for further information about where the master is.

    _In Spite of Harry's Toe Nail_은 첫번째 트랙인 'Long Live Man Dead_
   가 특별한 아주 훌륭한 앨범이야. 마스터 테입은 RCA Victor가 가지고 
   있는데 그 앨범은 아주아주 수집할만한 앨범이라고 생각해.
   마스트테입이 어디있는지에 대해 더 알고 싶으면 레코드회사에 연락해봐.

  Q5. 당신들 Goldring 형제들과 나머지 멤버들은 대략 80년대 초까지
    음악계에 이름을 남기고 있다. 그러나 그 이후의 활동에 대해서는
    알려진 것이 없어 궁금하다.

[Goldring]
    A5.  After Gnidrolog split up, band members went on to play and perform 
    with other groups.
    Nigel Pegrum [ drums] joined Steeleye Span and remained their drummer 
    for many years. He owned a record company and Colin and I recorded a 
    lot of commercial work for other record companies as session musicians. 
    He moved to Australia in 1993 and now owns and runs a very successful 
    recording company their. We have kept in contact and remain great 
    friends. He visits England from time to time and we discuss music 
    and have fun talking about the old days.

    Gnidrolog이 해산한다음, 밴드의 멤버들은 각자 다른 그룹으로 일하기
    위해 떠나갔지. 드럼치던 Nigel Pegrum은 Steeleye Span에 참여했고,
    수년동안 드러머로 남았지. 그는 레코드회사를 직접 가졌고, Colin 형과
    나는 세션 음악가로서 다른 레코드사를 위해 많은 상업적인 레코드를
    했어. 그는 93년도에 호주로 떠났고, 지금은 많은 성공적인 레코드회사를
    경영하고 있지. 우리는 요즘도 연락하고 있고, 좋은 친구로 남아있지.
    그는 가끔 영국을 방문하곤 하는데 우리는 음악과 지난 일을 재밌게
    얘기하곤 하지.

    Mars Cowling [bass] joined the Pat Travers Band in Canada but I 
    lost touch with him several years ago.
    John Earle joined Graham Parker and The Rumour and went to have 
    a long and successful career as a session musician. 

    베이스를 연주하던 Mars Cowling은 캐나다의 Pat Travers Band에 참여
    했는데 몇년전에 연락이 끊겼어.
    John Earle ( 소프라노, 테너, 바리폰 색서폰, Flute 등을 연주하던 친구)
    는 Graham Parker와 The Rumour에 참여했고, 세션연주자로 끊임없는
    성공의 길을 떠났지.
     

    Colin and me went on to work with Leiber and Stoller who wrote for 
    Elvis Presley and had a lot of success in the punk era with The 
    Pork Dukes, The Street Kings and other bands. You may be surprised 
    to know that we are still playing for fun in our own band, 
    The Goldring Brothers playing rock and roll at colleges and dance 
    venues! Colin is a Psychiatrist and I became a music teacher, 
    teaching improvisation and theory initially at the Blackheath 
    Conservatoire of Music and I am currently a Manager in a Further 
    Education College in London. I was responsible for designing courses 
    for young musicians who wanted to make it in the music industry! 
    I am also pleased to tell you that we are all well, happily 
    married with loads of beautiful children!

    콜린형과 나는 Elvis Presley를 위해 곡을 썼던 Leiber와 Stoller와
    함께 일을 하러 떠났고, Pork Dukes, The Street Kings와 다른 밴드들과 
    함께 펑크시대에서 많은 성공을 거뒀어. 우리가 계속 대학가나 댄스
    파티장에서 락앤롤을 연주하고 있는 '금반지 밴드'라고 불리는 우리의 
    밴드에서 여전히 연주하는 것을 즐기고 있다는 것을 안다면 너희들은 
    매우 놀랄거야. 콜린 형은 정신과 의사이고 나는 초기에 the Blackheath
    Conservatoire of Music 에서 창작과 이론을 가르치는 음악선생님이
    되었어. 지금은 현재 런던에는 진보음악대학에서 학장으로 일하고 있어.
    나는 음악계에서 성공하길 원하는 젊은 음악가들을 지도하는 과정을
    책임지고 있었어. 나는 우리 모두 아주 잘 있고, 아주 많은 이쁜 어린애 
    들과 결혼해서 행복하게 있다는 것을 말하게 되서 매우 기뻐.
    (음악선생님이 되어서 기쁘다는 얘기겠죠? 설마 애들하고 결혼했다는
    얘기는 아닐거에요. -.-;)

  Q6. 당신들의 음악은 70년대의 프로그레시브 록이라는 장르로 분류
    되고 있고, 그 쟝르는 현재 거의 포괄적 대중성은 이미 잃은 상태
    이나 여전히 마이너리티의 대중은 가지고 있다. 예스는 이미,
    메이저 레이블에서 쫓겨났고, 킹 크림즌은 컬트 밴드로 치부되고
    있을 뿐이다.  당신들은 자신들의 70년대 초 음악을 아직도 
    연주하길 원하고 있는가? 만약 다시 예전의 음악 활동으로 돌아
    간다면 상업적인 면도 고려하겠는가?

[Goldring]
A6. Progressive music is very challenging to play, it takes 
    hours of practice and considerable skills and creativity. I enjoy 
    listening to this music, but don't seem to get the time to perform 
    it. I am currently enjoying playing improvised music in a band 
    called 'The Universe' which I find highly enjoyable - we will 
    shortly be releasing an album here in England.

    진보음악은 매우 연주하기 어렵고 많은 연습시관과 상당한 기술과
    창조성이 필요해. 나는 음악을 듣길 좋아하지만, 연주하는데 많은
    시간을 가질 것 같지 않아. 나는 지금 아주 재미있는 것을 찾아낸
    'The Universe'라고 불리는 밴드에서 즉흥연주하는 것을 즐기고 있어. 
    우리는 영국에서 앨범 하나를 발매할거야.





[YBD]
  Q7. 참으로 오랜 시간이 흘렀다. Rock할 좋은 시절은 다 갔다. 
    현재는 많은 modern rock band들이 주류를 이루고 있다. 
    그들에 대한 견해는? 그리고 현재 활동하고 있는 밴드중에 맘에 
    드는 밴드는?
 
[Goldring]
  A7. Never too old to rock and roll! I am playing better than 
    ever. I am afraid that I don't like much of what I hear of 
    modern bands. They seem too driven by commercial aspects rather 
    than making music they enjoy. In other words, they play music 
    they think people want to hear, rather than playing good music 
    for themselves. I also think that technology has had a bad effect 
    on developing the musical skills of bands and that lyricism and 
    musicality have suffered considerably. Having said that, I am 
    impressed with bands like Radiohead and Blur.
   
    결코 락앤롤하기에 늙지 않았어. 나는 이전보다 훨씬 잘 연주하고 있지. 
    나는 모던락 밴드중에 상당부분을 싫어하고 있다는 것이 걱정돼.
    그들은 그들 자신이 즐기고 있는 음악을 만들고 있질 않고, 상업적인 면에 
    너무 강요되고 있는 것 같아. 달리 말하면, 그들은 그들 자신에게
    좋은 음악을 만들지 않고, 듣는 사람들이 어떤 것을 원하는지 생각하면서
    음악을 연주하지. 나는 테크날러지가 많은 밴드들의 음악적인 기술에
    나쁜 영향을 미쳐왔고, 또한 작사와 음악성이 매우 나빠져왔다고 생각해.

    그것에 대해 말하자면(최근좋아하는 밴드) 나는 Radiohead나 Blur같은
    밴드가 매우 인상적이었어.

  Q8. 왜 밴드를 해체했니? 팀원간의 불화?

[Goldring]
  A8. Gnidrolog split up because band members could not decide whether 
    to become more commercial.

   더 상업적이 될지 말지 결정할 수 없었기 때문에 해체했어.





[YBD]
  Q9. 너희 형제가 60년대에 prog rock을 시작하게 된 배경은 뭐니?
    앨범 뒷면을 보면 밴드 멤버들의 사진이 있는데, 한명을 빼고
    모두 콧수염을 길렀고, 혈기왕성한 모습인데. 그 당시 얘기를
    해줘. 

[Goldring]
  A9. I am not quite sure about this question. Progressive music started 
    because we were bored with the 3 minute pop song with no musical 
    interest and substance. Concerning beards and moustaches, I wish 
    we had enough hair to grow them now! Remember that I was 19 in 
    the picture and am now 47 years old!

   이 질문에는 확신할 수 없는데. 우리는 음악적인 요소와 본질은 가지고
   있지 않은 3분짜리 팝송에 싫증을 느꼈기 때문에 progressive rock을
   시작했어. 턱수염과 콧수염에 대해 말하자면, 나는 우리들이 지금도
   충분히 기를 수 있는 모발을 가지고 있길 바래. 그 사진에는 내가
   열아홉살이었고 지금은 마흔일곱살이라는 걸 생각해봐.
   (흠. 금반지형제들도 Lennon, Fish님과 같은 증상을 겪고 있는거
   아닌가요? *:-)




[YBD]
  Q10. 지금까지 모두 옛날 얘기만을 했는데 이제 장차 있을 얘기를
   해줘. 지금부터 무엇을 할거니? 개인적으로는 계속 좋은 음악
   활동을 해주면 좋을텐데. 

[Goldring]
  A10. Finally, we are still enjoying making music and I think we 
    were very lucky not to be caught up with the drug culture that 
    claimed so many of the lives of our friends in the industry. 

  마지막으로 우리들이 여전이 음악하는 걸 즐기고 있고,
  음악계의 많은 우리 친구들의 삶을 앗아간 마약 문화에 사로잡히지
  않은 것은 매우 행운이라고 생각하고 있어.


마지막으로 한국의 팬들에게,특히 예바동의 proghead들에게
인사를 해주겠어?


Thank you for your interest in our music. We had a lot of fun 
recording it and it has added immense value to our lives. 
Can I wish all our fans in Korea peace and love and keep 
listening and enjoying progressive music. 

우리 음악에 관심을 보여줘서 고마와. 우리는 정말 재미있게 그걸 
녹음했고, 그것은 우리 삶에 많은 가치를 더해줬어. 한국에 있는
모든 우리 팬들에게 평화와 사랑이 있길 바라고 계속해서 프로그레시브
