이번에는 YBD 역사이래 최초로 프로록 아티스트와와의 interview를 성공시켰읍니다. 여러분께 그다지 잘 알려진 팀은 아닌데 IQ라는 영국의 neo-prog group 있지요? 그 팀의 vocalist이자 leader인 Peter Nicholls의 친한 친구를 제가 net에서 만나서 이런저런 얘기를 하다가 그 착한 친구 (Dene Wilby)의 도움으로 interview를 할 수 있었읍니다. [예바동]의 여러분에게 보내는 Peter Nicholls의 greeting도 있습니다.

IQ에 대해서

IQ는 잘아시는대로 Marillion, Pallas, 12th Night와 더불어 속칭 neo-prog로 분류되는 영국의 rock group입니다. 역시 Genesis의 영향을 많이 받은 team이구요. 제 개인적인 견해로는 Genesis가 Duke album 다음으로 pop song group 으로 전락하지 않았다면 아마 지금 IQ 같은 음악을 하고 있을 거라고 생각할만큼 훌륭한 sound를 들려주는 team입니다. 참고로 Gibraltar의 Mike가 listing한 Best neo-prog album에 IQ의 The Wake와 Tales from the lush attic이 Marillion의 The script for a jester's tear와 더불어 있더라고요.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I`m amazed to know we have supporters in Korea, i'd never have imagined you would know about IQ. Well, i'll answer your questions for you.

너의 친절한 말에 고마워(사실 아부를 좀 했음). 나는 한국에도 우리의 후원자가 있다는 사실에 정말 놀랐어. 나는 네가 IQ에 대해 알리라고 상상도 못했는데. 네가 물어본 질문에 답할께.

Q1. I think the band's name IQ means Intellingence Quotient, right? Is there any special reason that you use IQ as your band's name?

Q1. 나는 당신 band의 이름 IQ가 Intelligence Quotient의 약자라고 생각 하는데, 그런 이름을 쓰게된 특별한 이유가 있나? Yes, IQ does stand for 'Intelligence Quotient' but we certainly didn't choose the name because we're all intelligent! When the band was formed in 1981, nobody could decide on a name. At the time, Mike was studying Psychology so, in desperation, we got one of his books, opened it at any page and pointed at the first word he saw, which was....IQ!

그래, IQ는 'Intelligence Quotient'(지능지수)의 약자야. 하지만 우리가 Intelligent해서 그 이름을 고른건 절대아냐!! 우리가 1981년에 Band를 조직했을때, 아무도 밴드이름을 결정하지 못했어. 그당시, Mike(Mike Holmes, group의 guitarist)가 심리학을 공부하고 있었는데, 이름을 못정해 약간 답답해하던 우리는 그의 책을 하나 집어들었지. 아무 page나 열어서 첫번째 단어를 산택했어. 그게바로.... IQ

Q2. I can hear from your music that your main influence came from Peter Gabriel. Is there any other artist that you received much influence other than Gabriel?

Q2. 나는 당신의 음악을 들을때마다 당신은 Peter Gabriel에게 가장 큰 영향을 받았다고 생각하는데, Gabriel 말고 영향받은 다른 artist가 있다면? Peter Gabriel was an influence in the early days and at first when I was compared to him, I was quite flattered by it. But after a while, I got a bit fed up with it because I really wanted people to see me as Peter Nicholls, I wanted to be able to do my own thing. It's true that my vocal style was definitely influenced by him when I started out, but now I feel like I just sing like me. Lots of singers have influenced me over the years, male and female. The most important quality of a good singer, for me, is someone who puts feeling and expression and emotion into the performance. I love people like David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Tori Amos, The Beatles...

Peter Gabriel은 나의 옛 시절의 가장 큰 영향을 준 사람이지. 처음에 사람들이 그와나를 비교할때, 나는 정말 과찬의 말씀이라고, 아부받는것 처럼 생각됐어. 하지만 얼마뒤, 나는 fan들이 나를 Peter Nicholls 그 자체로 봐주길 바랬고, 나도 또 나의 곡들을 부를 수 있기를 바랬어(처음에는 IQ는 Genesis의 cover band로 시작했음). 내 노래 스타일이 내가 처음 노래를 부르기 시작했을 때는 Gabriel에게서 많은 영향을 받았다는건 정말 사실이야. 하지만 지금은 내 목소리를 찾은 것 같아. 많은 가수들이 지난 시간동안 나에게 영향을 주었어. 여자든 남자든. 내 생각에 가장 중요한 가수의 자질은 감정을 넣어 노래하고 공연에서 표현력과 감정을 불어 넣을 수 있는것이라고 생각해. 나는 David Bowie, Babra Streisand, Tori Amos, The Beatles 등을 좋아해....

Q3. What is your favourite IQ album?

Q3. 당신이 가장 좋아하는 IQ album 은? Probably 'Ever'... it's the most consistent IQ album, the only one I can listen to from start to finish without feeling awkward. I'm very proud of it. But i`m also very fond of 'The Wake', too. Good strong songs.

아마도 'Ever'(가장 최근, 1993년 앨범)일거야. 가장 일관성있는 앨범이고 내가 처음부터 끝까지 어색함 없이 들을 수 있는 앨범이니까. 나는 이 앨범에 자부심을 느껴. 하지만 나는 'The Wake'도 굉장히 좋아해. 훌륭하고 강력한 곡들이지.

Q4. I think The Wake and Tales from the Lush Attic are both concept albums. What are their concepts anyway?

Q4. 나는 The Wake와 Tales from the Lush Attic 둘다 concept album 이라고 생각하는데, concept는 도대체 뭐지? There isn't a concept with 'TALES FROM THE LUSH ATTIC', each song is about a different subject. But THE WAKE is definitely all about death. There's a story running right through it, of a main character who dies, but it's much too complicated to explain it all here.

'TALES FROM THE LUSH ATTIC'에는 컨셉트가 없어, 각각의 노래는 각각 다른 주제를 가지고 있지. 하지만 'THE WAKE'는 물론 '죽음'에 관한 노래들로 구성되어 있어. 앨범 전체를 흐르는 이야기도 있고. 주인공의 죽음에 관한 이야기지. 하지만 여기서 설명하기는 너무 긴 얘기야.

Q5. Your artwork on IQ albums are really awesome. Did you have any art lessons?

Q5. 당신이 IQ album에 그린 표지그림들은 정말 대단하던데, 미술교육을 받은적이 있나? Thank you! I did a foundation course in Art a few years ago, and in fact my real job is as a freelance illustrator, working mostly on children's comics and books. I like the fact that, with IQ, I do all the artwork, we write all the songs together, Mike produces the albums, and the whole thing is completely self-contained, it's 100% IQ.

고마워! 나는 몇년전 기초 미술교육을 받은적이 있어. 사실 나의 진짜 직업은 프리랜서 일러스트레이터야. 애들 만화와 책에 그림을 그리는. IQ에서 나는 artwork를 하고, 작곡을 같이하고, Mike는 앨범을 produce하지. 이 사실이 나는 좋아. 모든건 IQ 내에서 해결하지. 그건 바로 100% IQ 야.

Q6. We often regard IQ along with Marillion ,Pallas and 12th Night as neo-prog bands. What do you think about other 2nd generation neo-prog bands like Marillion and Pallas? And what do you also think about your '90s decendants like Anglagard, Anekdoten, Echolyn etc?

Q6. 우리는 종종 IQ를 Marillion, Pallas, 12th Night와 함께 neo-prog band로 간주하는데, 다른 제 2세대 neo-prog band에 대해선 어떻게 생각해? Marillion이나 Pallas말이야. 그리구 또한 당신들의 '90년대 후배인 Anglagard, Anekdoten, Echolyn 등은 또한 어떻게 생각하지? I always liked Pallas and Twelfth Night,(Geoff Mann was a good friend), but I never really liked Marillion in the early days, I must admit. They're a lot better now with Steve Hogarth. The latest bands I never get to hear, really. We played with Anglagard in L.A. last year, but they weren't my kind of thing at all. I've never heard Anekdoten and Echolyn....

나는 항상 Pallas와 12th Night를 좋아했어(Geoff Mann은 좋은 친구였지) (Twelfth Night의 vocalist Geoff Mann은 몇년전 직장암으로 사망) 하지만 나는 초기 Marillion은 절대 좋아하지 않았어. 그들은 지금 Steve Hogarth 와 함께가 훨씬 나은것 같아 (사실 Peter Nicholls는 Marillion과 항상 비교되고, 또한 neo-prog하면 항상 IQ의 이름이 Marillion뒤에 따라다녀서 좀 자존심이 Marillion 에 대해서 상해있는지도 모름. Fish와는 사이가 안좋은걸지도 모름). 최근의 밴드들은 사실 들어본 적이 없어. 우리는 Anglagard와 작년에 L.A.에서 같이 공연한적이 있는데, 그들은 내 type의 음악을 하는 팀은 아니더라구. 글구..Anekdoten 과 Echolyn은 들어본적이 없어 (Anglagard와의 공연은 작년의 '93 PROGFEST 를 얘기하는 것 같음, Now등과 같이 공연했음).

Q7. Would you please say hello to Korean progheads at YeBaDong (rough translation of Art Rock Club)? And do you have any plan to tour Korea in the near future? (Ha Ha, just a thought....)
